“Resolve to be always beginning -to be a beginner!” This was a very prominent theme in Rilke’s famous Letters to a Young Poet, as he wrote advice to a fellow and burgeoning poet….to always keep a curious and open mind throughout life. Do you remember when you were a kid, and you took curiousity and joy in everything in life? Then as you age, the responsibilities of adulthood and life begin to burden you, and we struggle to maintain that happiness and wonder. As we reach middle age, we tend to try to relive our childhood and youth through music, tradition, and anything that connects us to the innonence and blissful ignorance of our childhood. I think Rilke is trying to tell us to never stop questioning or learning, to resolve to always be a beginner. Is not everday the beginning of the rest of your life? As they say, leave the past behind and don’t fret about the future. Live your life today, and always be a beginner.
